Keyword research is an important aspect on natural organic search engine traffic or SEO. Like doing everything else, you need to do market survey first, that’s keyword research in our case. You must know the demand and supply of that particular phase to see if it is justifiable for you to enter into the market.

Ok, now, let’s go through the procedures now:

1. Search the trend of SEO keywords on overtures.

Visit http://inventory.overture.com, you can type in your keywords and it will return the numbers of search for its related keywords. The data is search count for the previous month. From there, you will be able to judge whether if the keywords is in high demand or not. Overture only shows you the data from overture search or Yahoo, and they are not the bigger search engine, right! The bigger Search Engine is Google and you need to multiply the number by 5 times to get a realistic count.

Pick a keywords that has more than 500 or 1000 counts if possible.

2. Survey the SEO market competition on Google

Enter the keywords of your choice and enter them into Google search box. See how many results on Google search. You need as low results as possible such that there isn’t many people are competing the keywords with you. You can find this number on top right corner similar to “Results 1 – 10 of about 477,000,000 for keywords (0.19 seconds)”. The number in red is the number of pages competing to that particular keywords.

3. Repeat #1 & #2 steps till you have searched all the keywords you have. Now you have to narrow down and take out only keyword competition count that has less than 5,000,000 if possible. That will make your SEO task easier. If you can find one with less than 1,000,000 competition, great, those are some good keywords niche for your search engine optimization.

If you like to be more accurate search competition count. Well, you just need to surround the keyword phase with quote before and after the phase, for example, enter “Keyword SEO Search on Google” on Google search box, this means an exact search phase that the page contains the whole phases in the page. Relevancy is an important rating criteria Google is using. Google will show your result when your keywords phases is closer to what the customer is looking for. So, phase search with quote can use useful to tell you more accurate competition.

If you are using phase search with quote, you must find one with competition that is less than 10,000 to be justifiable for SEO.

You can do this task fairly simple, however, it may takes up quite a lots of your time if you do this repeatedly. There is a piece of software that I used to automate this search, it is called “Keyword Elite” by Brad Callen. Project #1 and #2 of the software can do exactly what I was tell you but it automate the process and show you the result right away. You can immediately filter the research and select your SEO keywords phase within 5 to 10 minutes. You can also save the data into Excel or spreadsheet and you can re-use the data from time to time. The “Keyword Elite” software costs a bit, but it is definitely worthwhile to invest as it save your time typing the keywords one by one.
