Just wanted to pop by to not only agree with your advice here but to offer up a resource for anyone using suggestion #3 on your list – namely, submitting to article directories…
Feel free to use my resource page (linked via my name on this comment) to find a ton of article directory sites.
And if you don’t want to take the time to submit to ALL relevant directories there, then simply choose a few of the very highest (Google PR) ranked directories *and* any in the Niche directory category that relate to the theme of your article.
From what I know, Google ranks links best if they are linked from a page with a similar theme (ie to the article), and better yet if the entire website has the same theme.

Here’s another way to get backlinks.
Visit websites of university student newspapers. The articles (by journalism students, of course) encourage comments and many of them ask for your website.
By experimenting you can find out which of these papers get crawled by Yahoo. Then focus your energies on those papers.
Write useful feedback for the author of the article. That way you are giving value for the value you are getting.
Advantage of this method: instead of submitting your link to 300 directories and getting, say 20 links out of it, you can get one link for every post.
